This standard applies to immersion suit systems for marine abandonment and constant wear. This standard applies to suit systems that reduce thermal shock upon entry into cold water; delay the onset of hypothermia during immersion in cold water; provide acceptable flotation and minimize the risk of drowning; do not impair the wearer's ability to perform fundamental survival actions; and, in the case of constant wear immersion suits, do not impair the wearer's ability to perform normal working duties.

The testing and evaluation of a product against this standard may require the use of materials and/or equipment that could be hazardous. This document does not purport to address all the safety aspects associated with its use. Anyone using this standard has the responsibility to consult the appropriate authorities and to establish appropriate health and safety practices in conjunction with any applicable regulatory requirements prior to its use.
